I appreciate that we read The Epic of Gilgamesh even though I didn't think it was the most interesting literature to me. I like the concept of immortality in this story. I think this is a great example of literature lasting through time. I understand why we read this story however it was not the most entertaining story we could have read

It is obvious that humans are physically immortal. However, it is also obvious that after entire civilizations are destroyed or fall and we are still discussing the people from those civilizations. So i believe that the energy of the person or people carry on through people that they encountered or texts and literature that are passed through time to remember Gilgamesh was a king of Uruk but his people were not fond of him. Gilgamesh was very arrogant and had a unrealistic goal of becoming immortal. Most people take this literally but i see it as wanting to become legendary and never dying in the sense that your energy will live on through the thoughts of people and be taught at high schools in 2012 after thousands of years of the epic being written, so in a sense I believe that Gilgamesh did achieve his quest for immortality living through others. The God Enlil created a beast named Humbaba to represent evil and terror to humans. Humbaba lives in a forest that Enkidu and Gilgamesh travel to to kill this beast. There is a huge battle and the two companions Enkidu and Gilgamesh defeat the best Humbaba. Humbaba tries to fool the friends in a last effort to escape the two. I think this shows how strong Gilgamesh is even though he is one third human. I question the motives behind Enkidu's actions seeing as he was created as a wild man to challenge Gilgamesh and rid him of his ignorance. This makes me feel as though Enkidu is not trustworthy because he is a wild man who was raised by animals. Enkidu embodies the wild world in the story. Enkidu and Gilgamesh become life long companions which obviously answers the question of Enkidu being friend although I did question if he was a foe at first. I think that Aruru accomplished what she created Enkidu for because eventually Gilgamesh did become more compassionate and less ignorant while Enkidu became more tame and more human like. Each friend benefited the other. |
